Ragnhild Hemsing Named Artist-in-Residence at Stavanger Symphony Orchestra
The violinist and Hardanger fiddle player will take on a central artistic role in several productions, serving as both a soloist and an ambassador for classical and folk music.
Ragnhild Hemsing bridges the worlds of classical music and Norwegian folk traditions, weaving them together in ways that both move and surprise audiences. In the upcoming season, she will serve as the Artist-in-Residence at the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, performing as a soloist in numerous concerts throughout the year for audiences of all ages, including children, youth, and adults.
– "I’ll be performing Geirr Tveitt with conductor Julie Røssland, taking part in the Christmas concerts, playing Peer Gyntin a production aimed at children and youth, and much more. I’m really, really looking forward to all of it," says Hemsing.
FROM VALDRES TO THE WORLD
Born and raised in Valdres, Hemsing began playing both the violin and Hardanger fiddle at the age of five. She made her debut as a soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra at just 14 years old. She pursued her education at the Barratt Due Institute of Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Today, she is recognized as one of the very few professional musicians who excel at both the violin and the Hardanger fiddle at a high level.
Hemsing has performed with leading orchestras across Europe, Asia, and the United States and is particularly renowned for her ability to blend classical repertoire with the tonal world of Norwegian folk music. A key element in this work is her use of the Hardanger fiddle – specifically, a historical instrument once owned by Ole Bull, which is currently on loan to her from Dextra Musica.
MUSIC THAT BUILDS BRIDGES
Hemsing’s artistry goes beyond technique and talent; it is also about communication and innovation. Her goal is to open doors to music for a wide audience, regardless of age or prior knowledge.
– "I love Ragnhild and am absolutely thrilled that she will join us as Artist-in-Residence next season," says Kathryn Hjelsvold, Head of Programming at Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
– "I’ve followed her career and am deeply impressed by her artistic development and level of excellence. At Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, we are confident that our audience – children, youth, and adults alike – will greatly appreciate having her with us."
